Blizzard Entertainment today announced that total World of Warcraft [WoW] subscribers has surpassed 11 million, equal to the population of the entire state of Ohio, according to 2007 census estimates.
The news comes as anticipation builds for the release of the game's second expansion pack, Wrath of the Lich King, which launches on November 13.
"Since debuting in North America in 2004, World of Warcraft has become the most popular MMORPG in the world," Blizzard announced in a statement today...
World of Warcraft is unique (compared to most games) in that gamers must pay a monthly subscription fee of $13-15 per month to play, in addition to buying the game for $30. The MMO has also drawn criticism from disgruntled spouses and researchers for being abnormally addictive.
Jeff's Thoughts: No word on whether congress is going to allow the WoW state special representation in the Electoral college. Okay, that was stupid...

I don't know where you heard "What happens in Facebook stays in Facebook," but World of Warcraft goes beyond the hype.
I played frequently when Blizzard advertised 7 million players, around the time of the second expansion pack.
Blizzard leaves lots of flexibility in gameplay.
Three types of realms (servers) exist: Role Playing, Normal, and Player vs. Player. A player may have various characters on various servers. The plot of Horde vs. Alliance remains in all variations.
Role Playing realms require that all characters speak in language fitting the setting of gameplay. Players do not mix real life with the game in these realms.
Normal realms focus on in game quests and player vs. environment challenges, though there are battlegrounds for players to battle other players.
Player vs. Player realms are composed mostly of contested areas and battles between players occur most often in this type of realm.

World of Warcraft also has a currency (Gold) with an actual exchange rate against other real world currencies. You can buy World of Warcraft gold here - http://www.wowmine.com/ amongst many other places. You shouldn't though, because it really takes away from the experience.

What Blizzard doesn't tell you is that 75% of its population is in Asia. Actually, 6 million of them are in China, the remainder are spread across Thailand and Korea. Only about 2-3 million are actually in the US.
It's the same way that many Free to Play MMORPGs are able to say they have "over 3 million players" even though the US servers are for all intents and purposes dead.
