What an awesome post! God allows, controls, and uses BOTH success and failure.

I really fear for American churches which are obsessed with "success" in terms of numbers. IF "failure" in dwindling membership or declining donations comes (And, most likely, it willl continual exponential growth is just not possible. At some point it must plateau.), I hope church leaders will learn your perspective.

Most church leaders seem to think that if a church dwindles or stays small, God's hand cannot be in that. It MUST BE a failure of the vision, a failure of the structure, a failure of the people...What if it is not failure at all? What if it is just a time God uses to get at what really matters--the heart?

Honestly, I think most churches have lost their hearts at the gain of their heads (Pun intended.) I'm glad that there are still people in the church, like you, who ponder what success and failure REALLY are.
