According to Bishop James Ussher (1581-1656), God created the universe on October 23, 4004 BC. That would make the universe 6009 years old in 2006 AD. James Ussher was an Irish Archbishop whose chronology of Biblical history was widely accepted throughout Christianity.
Sir James Lightfoot improves that calculation to 9 AM Oct 3, 4004 BC. While the Oct 3rd date is irrelevant to today, at least it's noice to know that God clocked in on time when he got started back in the day.
